Policy:Town, City, and Settlement Naming

The Pillow Fortress has a strict policy with regards to the naming of towns, cities, and other settlements which are established under the authority of either the Department of Housing & Urban Development or the Department of Territory. Despite being so formalized, none of the provisions of the policy are absolute, and one or more may be abrogated with special permission from the Princess.

Naming Guidelines

1. Names associated with individuals, either living or dead, are to be avoided.

2. Novelty names, such as those consisting of phrases or complete sentences, random strings of letters, or are otherwise overly long, or associated with fictional media or brands are to be avoided.

3. Numerals may not be used in names.

4. Names may not be chosen in order to either offend or discriminate.

5. Names should have significance, and not be chosen at random.

6. Nearby geographic features, local flora and fauna, significant historical events, values, or intended purpose are some, though not necessarily all, valid subjects for deriving names.

7. The word 'New' is to be added in front of any name which is a reference to a currently existing town, city, or settlement.

8. The word 'Third' is to replace the word "New" if the name is a reference to a currently existing town, city, or settlement that has 'New' in its name.

9. If a name is a reference to a town, city, or settlement which existed in the ancient or medieval past and which is no longer inhabited, the word 'New' need not be added in front.

10. No more than one of the following suffixes may be added to a word to create an acceptable name:

• by
• den
• field
• gate
• holm
• kand
• opolis
• port
• shire
• ton
• worthy
• ville
