Pillow Fortress Armed Forces vessel naming conventions

From Pillow Fortress Wiki

The Pillow Fortress Armed Forces use a single unified system of naming conventions for their various ships (both oceanic and stellar), as maintained by the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces Vessel Registry Agency (PFAFVRA), a field operating agency of the Order of the Navy. This is to ensure clear communication and understanding between the various militaries, paramilitaries, orders, and commands when engaged in joint operations. For illustrative purposes, this article will use the fictional naval vessel FMV Triton in its examples.

Name

Every commissioned ship used by the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces has a name consisting of four parts:

Prefix Name proper Hull designation Hull number
FMV Triton BA(AR) 1

Prefix

The prefix "FMV", short for "Fortressian Military Vessel", goes at the start of all commissioned ship names in use by the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces, even those used by paramilitaries, regardless of their size or mission role. This identifies these ships as belonging to and operating on behalf of the Principality.

Name proper

The name proper is what most people might think of as the name of a ship. There is no universal standard among the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces as to how names proper are chosen, with each organ responsible for commissioning the vessel free to develop such on their own, though they are encouraged to choose names meaningful to them. If there is already a commissioned ship with a particular name proper, the PFAFVRA may deny any additional ships wishing to use the same or too similar a name proper for as long as that first ship remains commissioned.

Hull designation

The hull designation denotes what type of vessel a ship is. It consists of two parts, the classifier and the discriminator. The classifier is a two letter code indicating what type of ship it is in the broadest sense, such as aircraft carrier, destroyer, cruiser, etc. Following the classifier in parentheses is the two letter discriminator, which provides a greater level of specificity regarding the form and function of the ship.

For the example of the FMV Triton BA(AR) 1:

BA = battleship

(AR) = arsenal

Hull number

The hull number is simply the serial number of a particular ship within a given hull designation, regardless of class. For example, the FMV Triton BA(AR) 1 is the first such BA(AR) (battleship (arsenal)), and the next such ship would be BA(AR) 2, then BA(AR) 3, etc. Hull numbers are sequential across the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces. If, for example, the Order of the Coast Guard and the Order of the Selecty were the first and second to commission aircraft carrier escorts, hull designation AC(ET), their ships would be number 1 and 2, respectively. If then the Order of the Coast Guard was to commission another air craft carrier escort, it would have the hull number 3, and so on.
