The Department of Defense oversees and manages the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces, ensuring civilian control over all militaries and paramilitaries which are empowered to use physical force in the defense of the Principality. It's secretary is recommended by the Council of State.

Branches

General Branches

Defense Families Branch

The Defense Families Branch provides certain services to the spouses and dependent children of active duty military and paramilitary personnel.

Defense Finance Branch

The Defense Finance Branch provides financial services to the Department of Defense, active duty and former military and paramilitary personnel, and their families.

Defense Logistics Branch

The Defense Logistics Branch manages the civilian side of defense logistics, serving to interface between the militaries and paramilitaries (mostly the Platinum Band) and civilian government organizations and independent businesses.

Veteran Affairs Branch

The Veteran Affairs Branch provides services to the veterans of the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces, including but not limited to medical, education, and employment services.

Oversight Branches

The oversight branches are one mechanism by which the Department of Defense integrates civilian control into the armed forces, specifically the Platinum Band. Each branch is the leadership of their respective order, having final say on matters of budget, procurement, etc.

Air Force Branch

The Air Force Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Air Force.

Army Branch

The Army Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Army.

Cyber Force Branch

The Cyber Force Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Cyber Force.

Militia Branch

The Militia Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Militia.

Navy Branch

The Navy Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Navy.

Selecty Branch

The Selecty Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Selecty.

Spacy Branch

The Spacy Branch provides oversight and leadership to the Order of the Spacy.

Independent Agencies

Advanced Military Research Agency

The Advanced Military Research Agency researches, develops, and deploys new and emerging technologies and combat techniques in service of the Principality's defense. It is a civilian agency with joint civilian/military personnel.

Military Criminal Investigation Agency

The Military Criminal Investigation Agency is the civilian law enforcement agency which has jurisdiction over the militaries and paramilitaries of the Pillow Fortress.

Military Historical Society

The Military Historical Society preserves the history of the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces, and publishes definitive histories of the Principality's military engagements. It is a civilian agency with joint civilian/military personnel.

Military Intelligence Organization

The Military Intelligence Organization is the joint civilian/military intelligence agency of the Department of Defense, which gathers intelligence of military and defense significance while engaging in counter-intelligence against hostile foreign states and powers. It is a member of the Pillow Fortress Intelligence Community.

Military Journalism and Reporting Agency

The Military Journalism and Reporting Agency provides news and information about the military, mostly the Platinum Band, to active duty personnel and to civilian news agencies. A joint civilian/military agency, it is responsible for embedding reporters into military units and collecting audio and visual records of both regular military life and of battles.

Military Trends Analysis Agency

The Military Trends Analysis Agency studies and analyzes trends relating to the Pillow Fortress armed forces and other, foreign militaries, and makes recommendations and policy proposals regarding how the Principality can best utilize its armed forces.

Military Waste Disposal Authority

The Military Waste Disposal Authority handles the proper recycling and destruction of garbage produced by the PFAF to ensure minimal negative impacts to the environment and personnel.

POW Administration

The POW Administration houses prisoners of war captured, transferred, or otherwise under the authority of the Pillow Fortress. It is a joint military/civilian agency.

Strategic Defense Agency

The Strategic Defense Agency researches, develops, and maintains strategic defense platforms used by the Principality.

Militaries and Paramilitaries

Militaries

People's Army

The People's Army is an army consisting of those who, for whatever reason, were otherwise unqualified to join the Platinum Band, if only by a slight margin, such as age or physical fitness.

Platinum Band

The Platinum Band is the main fighting force of the Principality, being a professional, volunteer military consisting of various branches (referred to as "orders") dedicated to combat across the full spectrum of battlespaces. The Platinum Band is the largest of the Pillow Fortress Armed Forces and generally has some degree of authority over the others.

Paramilitaries

Home Front

Home Front consists of individuals who are otherwise unable or unwilling for service in the People's Army, Platinum Band, or People's Labor Force. Home Front jobs are typically low intensity, aiding with domestic emergencies. During times of peace, Home Front is under the authority of the Department of the Interior though it is always subordinate to the Department of Defense.

People's Labor Force

The People's Labor Force consists of ad hoc cadres and worker battalions established by the Principality during states of extreme emergencies, such as total war. Conscripted individuals are those judged to be unable to fight in the militaries, but are still fit for jobs in essential industries.

Offices

Office of the Department of Defense Media Liaison

The Office of the Department of Defense Media Liaison interfaces with Fortressian SOSO and independent media businesses seeking the use of military personnel/equipment/vehicles in their productions, and determines under what circumstances such coordination is acceptable. The Department of Defense Media Liaison has a mandate to protect the public image of the Fortressian armed forces.

Office of the Secretary of Defense

The Office of the Secretary of Defense consists of the Secretary of Defense and their support staff. It is the main organ through which the department is managed on the day-to-day level.

Office of the Undersecretary of Administration, Department of Defense

The Office of the Undersecretary of Administration, Department of Defense is responsible for all those organizational components of the department which fall under the TOF.
